Collection: Cate Day

Cate Day is as expressionist painter and ceramicist.  She Works from her garden studio in Maleny, the Cate Day Studio.  Cate makes oil paintings, ceramic sculptural forms and one-off pieces of tableware inspired by the environment immediately in front of her, her fascination with the female shape in all its forms and her love of texture and its interplay with colour.

Cate studied art throughout her secondary and tertiary education.  She focussed on a career in teaching and then school administration as she brought up her two, now adult children. Cate enjoyed teaching but always looked back wistfully at her first passion, art.

The pull to make art eventually won.  in 2014 Cate left her teaching career to pursue he dream of becoming a professional artist.  To help make the transition, she studied ceramics with Ray Cavill at Clay School Brisbane and completed a Diploma of Visual Arts.

Cate's paintings and ceramics are predominantly expressionist in style.  In her painting and her ceramics, it's all about vibrant colour and expressive texture and shapes. Finger marks and brush marks are never completely tidied away. Cate wants the viewer to know the that each piece has been made by hand.

Since becoming a professional artist Cate's work has been exhibited in several Sunshine Coast group exhibitions. In 2019 Cate was selected as a finalist inthe Ob, Obi Art prize and in 2022 she was a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Council's " Local Artist- Local Content" Art Prize.
